Author Maya Tyler Interview

What three words are used most to describe your writing style?

The words that appear most in my book reviews are: relatable; captivating; and entertaining… which (thankfully) is exactly my intention. I’ve always strived to write relatable characters who encounter interesting (captivating) challenges and resolve those challenges in an entertaining (unexpected) way.

What have you discovered about yourself through writing?

I’ve always said that writing is therapy for me. I find it very difficult to express my emotions out loud. Writing has always been easier for me. Through creating characters, often subconsciously, I can process my own challenges and provide my characters with satisfying outcomes. Sometimes, I don’t recognize the parallel to my own life until many reads, or even years, later. In my latest release, Designed by Destiny, my FMC experienced workplace harassment, but unlike my personal experience, received support and validation.

What do you hope readers gain from reading your books?

I hope readers walk away from my books feeling uplifted, entertained, and maybe even a little inspired. I hope my books provide a break from the stresses of real life with satisfying happily-ever-afters. I hope readers see pieces of themselves in my characters, inspiring their courage to face fears, to regain trust, and to find love. I encourage readers to believe in magic, both literal and figurative. And, I hope readers leave with a lighter heart, a reminder that after dark or difficult times, joy and love are possible.

Do you do anything special to get in the right mindset to write?

The right time to write is always now. I write when I have the time and capacity, heavily motivated by the fact that (sadly) books don’t write themselves.

How did publishing your first book change your writing process?

I don’t think my writing process has changed much since I published my first novella in 2014. However, publishing a book adds the responsibility of other writing-related processes like marketing. For instance, a published author needs an author brand, a website, a social media presence, and a newsletter and/or blog.

Which couple from your books is your favorite?

After writing many romance novels, picking a favorite couple is really difficult. Each one is special in their own way. I enjoy exploring a couple’s chemistry and learning their back stories and individual personalities. In particular, I enjoyed writing Beth and Nick from Designed by Destiny, especially their awkward exchanges as they got to know each other under the guise of a fake relationship.

How do you deal with writer's block?

I see “writer’s block” more as imposter syndrome rather than an inability to write. During the writing process, I experience moments of imposter syndrome which look like “this story is stupid, I’m a terrible writer, I should quit” but, if you can move past those moments, then you can see the overall process with more clarity. The first draft is probably going to suck. The writing, then the editing, process has moments which definitely suck. But the finished, polished product is going to be wonderful.

What form of marketing has yielded the best results?

Personally, I have seen positive results with social media and email marketing. But I think any type of marketing and promotion requires consistent efforts. My latest release was in November 2022 and my next release is TBD (hopefully this Fall). In-between book releases, I post regularly on social media, promote sales for my back list, send out a quarterly newsletter, and keep connected with the bookish community (author interviews, book spotlights). Consistent efforts between releases, especially prolonged ones, keeps up the momentum. So, overall, I think consistency yields the best results.
