Author Joan Silverhill Interview

ree

What three words would you use to describe your writing?

I think I had to answer this question in the sign up form! I’m not sure what I wrote back then, but at the moment, I feel that my writing is witty, warm, and hopeful

How do you decide where each book in the Unwritten Notes series will take place?

Honestly, I thought The Beat of Barcelona would be a standalone. But so many beta readers wanted more of the side characters that I’m now toying with the idea of continuing their stories. The settings will grow naturally from where these characters would realistically end up, and from the places that feel like they can continue their journeys.

I love when books contain mental health rep! Why was this important for you to include in The Beat of Barcelona?

As someone who has lived with anxiety my whole life, I wanted to show a main character who reflects that reality. Anxious people can freeze, spiral, and overthink everything to infinity and beyond, but we still show up for ourselves and others. We still get things done and keep moving toward our goals. It has been phenomenal to hear readers say that they feel seen because of Cori. Truly warms my heart!

You mentioned your writing process happens in layers; what does that look like?

I usually start with dialogue and the emotional heartbeat of a scene. Then I go back and layer in descriptions, humour, and sensory details. After that, I fine-tune word choice and pacing. I didn’t even realize I was doing this until I saw my outlines on google docs.

What inspired you to start writing?

I desperately needed a creative outlet. I was juggling full-time work, studying, and being a toddler mom, and I was very close to burning out. Writing gave me a space that was just mine, where I could breathe and create something joyful.

As a faceless author, what advice would you give to other authors who feel pressured to show their face on social media in order to "connect more" with readers?

You have to do what feels right for you. I still sometimes feel guilty for not showing my face, like I’m keeping part of myself hidden. But in the end, the readers who connect with your words will support you whether you share your face or not. Protecting your own boundaries is important!

Are you doing anything to celebrate The Beat of Barcelona's release on September 25th, 2025?

Most likely a cozy movie night with my family. And definitely avoiding Amazon for at least a week.

What have you discovered about yourself through writing?

That I am braver than I thought. Putting your words into the world is scary, but it has shown me that my voice matters. Also, despite imposter syndrome CONSTANTLY getting in the way, I still did it. I wrote the damn book, and I’m proud of myself!
